Today Catholics elected a new Pope and the world watched, completely enthralled. Round the clock newscasting of black smoke, speculation, and analysis came down to the smoke- an announcement
technique 1300 years old and filled with the comfort of tradition and expectation as your favorite pjs and Christmas Morning.
As a practicing Catholic, I was asked today, "When will ya'll finally come into the 21 Century and show the voting process on big screen TVs so the world can see?" I overheard commentators musing, while trying to fill airtime, that the Church must change with the times or face extinction.
I couldn't disagree more. At an age when technology moves at warp speed, communication and commerce move across the globe without any personal interaction whatsoever, and the corporate structure has edged out family businesses ,people are more dissatisfied than ever with both their work and personal lives. And, we crave more.
Not coincidentally, alongside of the technological advances, there is a decided resurgence of: walking neighborhoods with sidewalks and wide front porches for community, "home style" family restaurants with comfort food, and the desire to do business locally with those we know, like, and trust. The term "relationship marketing" has blossomed into business jargon and Entrepreneurs strive to create something of their own. We dream of making a real difference in the lives of those we love and our community at large. This yearning to make a difference is a distinctly human trait that technology will never replace.
A meaningful life is filled with family, friendships, deep connectedness, and tradition. "Trite"'does not become trite until "true" for quite a long time. Then, it becomes woven into the fabric of life. The more things change, the more they stay the same. We can't get past it, nor should we.
Don't alter tradition... and, Never Lose the Smoke!
